Project Introduction:

The west side of SLC (west of 400 West to be exact) is a vibrant, engaging array of various businesses and communities. The “River District Chamber of Commerce” emerged last year, out of a business alliance of 20 years, to advocate for the businesses and community organizations in the area. In addition to the visual identity, under the contract of modern8 creative agency,  we worked on designing street art and a mural to be painted within the River District to putting up some murals and street art within the River District over the next few months to begin rolling out the new branding.

  • The River District Business Alliance (RDBA) began in 1994 when residents and business owners saw mutual problems in the Westside neighborhoods, but held no representation with Salt Lake City. The RDBA recognized that when starting a business in a new neighborhood it is imperative that you get to know your neighbors. Businesses teamed up with residents and community members to have a positive impact along the TRAX project and North Temple Bridge. When Salt Lake City government did not listen to Westside-specific issues, community action was taken.

Salt Lake City now recognizes RDBA as a group that helps organize and get things done, hears ideas and advocates for the Westside community. RDBA joins businesses and neighbors, creating plans to present to the city to develop potential budgets and fundraising ideas.

Opportunity zones continue to open across the Westside and RDBA is looking forward to revitalizing the neighborhood and working on future projects.

  • Our ultimate goal is to create an economic development plan that assists and energizes businesses and community members while also reaching out for city participation.

  • Although the group has changed names over the years (Northwest Business Association, Northwest Merchant’s Association, Westside Business Association, River District Business Chamber) it has remained a strong voice for the Westside of Salt Lake City and has shown the great potential that this side of town offers.

Competitive Landscape

Other chamber of commerces around the state feel largely outdated. Serif typefaces and what looks like clip art are common in the majority of these logos. In order for the River District to stand out as a leader in the business community, the identity should reflect more modern and innovative design.

Mark Explorations

We explored multiple options and filtered by committee to show three options to stake holders. After which a mark was chosen that fulfilled the clients criteria.
